ICEMAN JOHN SCULLY TALKS THE KNOCKOUT SERIES,MAYWEATHER VS BERTO,RONDA RO– USEY & ALOT MORE IN THIS EXCLUSIVE TEAM LEFTJAB INTERVIEW!!
1. Looking back at the Knockout Series, what was your overall thoughts on it and would you want to do reality TV again?
ICE: I think it’s a potentially great show that just needs a bit of tweaking to turn into something special. I wouldn’t mind doing the show again, it was a lot of fun and I got to meet a lot of great people. I was in my element and I’d love to be IN there again. If I can work a few glitches out with the owner of the show, I would definitely be back.
2.How much did the last minute change of opponent from Rocco Santomauro to Jonathon Arrellano affect Mike Oliver’s performance in your opinion?
ICE: I think it had an effect because he was really focused on Rocco and determined to meet him. They had a little thing going on twitter of facebook and it was really building up. We literally didn’t find out until a couple days before the fight that it wasn’t happening and ended up fighting a heavier guy in Jonathon and got caught after literally winning every round up to that point. Jonathon did his job, though, all respect to him. That’s why they say “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
3. Overall the series received a great response from the fans and critics, do you see this series being around for many years to come?
ICE: Me personally, I would like to see a few things change in the content and format. There’s always room for improvement but I’d say that they are definitely on the right track. It had a lot of people talking and it gave some previously unknown guys some great exposure to the boxing world.
4.With Mayweather vs Berto right around the corner, do you feel the lack of excitement for this fight has to do with Berto being the opponent or now that the Pacquiao fight has happened the fans still feel let down by that fight not living up to the hype?
ICE: Honestly, I really do think they messed up by not having the Pacman fight as his last fight. That would have been the most dramatic and the most anticipated way to go out of boxing. No disrespect to Andre Berto because he’s a very good fighter who presents problems of his own but in regard to the whole production that is boxing, I would say anything or anyone after Pacman was going to be a let down.
5 Badou Jack vs George Groves seems like a 50/50 fight in the fans eyes…who do you see having the advantage in this fight?
ICE: I see it as a real and true 50-5-0 fight and I can’t even call it. A win by either guy will not surprise me at all.
6. What are your thoughts on the Mosley vs Mayorga fight and the promotion of it where some fans felt turned off because of the staged events at the press conferences?’
ICE: Well, Mayorga actually went on the Internet shortly after the incident and claimed that Shane told him to smack his girlfriend’s backside so that was kind of deflating. I mean, the whole point of doing things like that is to build interest and controversy. Going through with it and then coming on line 24 hours later to tell everyone it wasn’t real seemed kind of odd. I guess in a way it did help build interest because I saw a lot of chatter about the extra stuff. People weren’t really talking about the fight as much as they were about the goings on outside the ring so I suppose at the end of it all, whatever gets people to tune in on fight night is alright.
7.What were you’re thoughts on Santa Cruz vs Mares?
ICE: It went exactly as everyone said it would go, it was a great battle that has people wanting to see both of them again. It’s proof that at the end of it all people want to see great fights more than they want to see great promotion.
8.It looks like Roy Jones will continue to fight for quite some time, is he hurting his legacy?
ICE: I absolutely do not think so. I am one to believe that it doesn’t matter at all what any fighter does after his prime years are finished. Roy Jones in his prime was who he was and that can’t be changed. I always compare these situations to “Sugar” Ray Robinson. Ray went on to lose 19 fights after all was said and done and he was sometimes losing to guys who had records like 12-4 but people never use it against him and they shouldn’t use it against Roy either. Ray is always judged on his best years, rightfully so, and Roy should get the same consideration.
9.With all the press Ronda Rousey has gotten about fighting Floyd Mayweather and her coach saying she could be a boxing champion, what do you think is the reason Rousey and maybe Dana White want to get involved in these debates about fights that we know will never happen?
ICE: Strictly 100 percent to get her name in the mainstream media. Her name attached to Floyd’s is a great thing for her and, really, it’s been proving to be a brilliant marketing strategy for her. I’ve heard her name more in the last three weeks than I have in the last two years so they are doing something right. She’s one of the most well known figures in the fighting world despite the fact so many people only know her for her link to Floyd. But now they want to see for themselves what all the fuss is about. Her exposure to mass media is helping open doors that her fighting ability alone couldn’t do so it’s genius if you ask me.
