CHRIS EUBANK JR VS GARY O’SULLIVAN BREAKDOWN BY ODHRAN CRUMLEY

chris-eubank-jr-eubank-spike-gary-osullivan_3384348

In the chief supporting contest to the highly anticipated Joshua-Whyte fight is an equally enthralling contest in the shape of Irish man Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan against the WBA interim champion Chris Eubank Jr. If the fight plays out to be half as entertaining as this weeks build up we are in for a treat, a weigh in that saw former World Champion Chris Eubank Sr or ‘English’ dance on stage to Justin Bieber while in an explosive head to head Spike kissed his opponent on the lips after the latter had finally agreed to complete one after fearing this would happen as its not the first time the Cork native has landed in an unorthodox manner before the opening bell.

Although the fight has the Ireland Vs England edge the winner will win the right to face WBA King Daniel Jacobs who destroyed Peter Quillin in a round in his last outing. Both men have only one loss on their records to a mutual fighter in Billy Joe Saunders who challenges Andy Lee for his WBO crown next weekend. Since this defeat in November of last year Eubank has changed his trainer and joined forces with Adam Booth, signed promotional ties with Matchroom Sports under Eddie Hearn and picked up the WBA interim title stopping former champion Dmitry Chudinov, however he has been since stripped of the title.Although his last outing can only be described as a horrible mismatch where he disposed of Tony Jeter.

However Spike will provide a sterner test and will come to win and not only to survive and carries serious power with 15 knockouts in 22 victories stopping Dubliner Anthony Fitzgerald in one round a man who went the distance with Andy Lee and his stopped his last 5 opponents in three rounds. This could leave Eubank rethinking his offer of allowing the Irish man a free punch at the beginning of the contest. Both men are renowned punchers as the Brighton man also carries 15 wins inside the distance in 20 wins so one would find it hard to see the fight going the distance as fire is sure to be met with fire.

The bookies favour the Brighton man installed as a 1/6 favourite while Spike is a rank outsider at 4/1 while odds of only 2/9 are given for the contest to go the distance. In my opinion the odds do not reflect the close nature of this contest and Spike is worth a punt as if nothing else he has a punchers chance with his concussive power. Parallels can also be drawn to the last time a Cork man fought a Eubank with Steve Collins brother of Spikes trainer Pascal beating Chris’ father on two occasions in emphatic fashion. So the question remains, will history repeat itself and will a Cork native get one over on a Eubank once again or will Junior become mandatory for Daniel Jacobs’ title? One thing is sure amongst the uncertainty is the fans are in for a great fight! Don’t blink or you just might miss it..

RETURN OF THE COBRA? BY ODHRAN CROMLEY

Return of the Cobra?

carl froch

Upon announcing his retirement in July of this year Carl Froch admitted that the desire had gone, that there were no fights left to motive him. After his dream of fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr under the bright lights of Vegas collapsed as the latter was stopped inside nine by Andrzej Fonfara. Froch hung up the gloves after destroying domestic rival George Groves in front of 80,000 at Wembley Stadium and took up a punditry position with Sky Sports here in the UK.

However the emergence of IBF and WBA champ Gennady Golovkin widely regarded by many as the pound for pound number one has prompted the Nottingham puncher to claim that the Kazakh has given him “the itch to get back into the ring”. GGG carries an impressive 34-0 record with a devastating 31 knockouts halting his last 21 opponents mostly recently IBF king David Lemieux inside eight. Froch a warrior known to never shy away from a fight taking on some of the worlds best in Mikkel Kessler, Andre Ward and Arthur Abraham to name a few has stated that a UK stadium fight possibly Wembley or Las Vegas as two potential venues for what would be one of the biggest fights in the sweet science.

The fight would be an intriguing one as the Cobra who has never been stopped in the professional ranks meets a fighter who no one to date as been able to hear the final bell against him in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds. It is believed that informal negotiations have begun between Froch and K2 promotions (Golovkin’s handlers) in Düsseldorf where GGG was ringside and Carl was working for Sky Sports where he chatted with Tom Loeffler, CEO of K2 Promotions which the fight possibly happening as a catchweight contest.

If the Briton was to return the ring it seems that the Golovkin fight is the only contest that reignites his desire to return to the squared circle as when asked about the possibility of meeting fellow countryman and current IBF champ James DeGale, Froch claims that its a fight that would be “too easy” for him adding that it is not a fight DeGale wants as he has stated in recent interviews that Froch is retired and should stay retired, the cobra seems to interpret this as a unwillingness on the formers part to take the fight.
