In it’s second showcase of Monday Night Fight’s in the Big Apple, Golden Boy Promotions gave us a great card at the Barclays Center with local fighters looking to make their mark on the sport of boxing. The televised showcase began with Marcus Browne taking on Lamont Williams. Both fighters looked well prepared for their fight and in the end Marcus Browne won a unanimous decision in a rough fight. In the 2nd televised fight Mikey Perez took on Miguel Zuniga, who agreed to fight on short notice when Carlos Molina backed out with a last minute illness. The first few rounds Perez looked like he would make short work of Zuniga, with thunderous shots to both the head and body on Zuniga, but the Mexican kid showed tremendous heart and determination by continuing to fight and actually bring the fight to Perez in the later rounds. Yet still Perez would not be denied, and won the title by unanimous decision. The main event of the evening was Sadam “World Kid” Ali took on Jay “Smoke” Krupp. Fighting in his backyard Ali dominated the entire 1st round until Krupp caught a careless Ali and dropped him with about 5 seconds left in the round. Ali got up as the round ended but the crowd was definitely in shock. As round two began Ali was cautious and began to box rather than exchange with Krupp and clearly won the second round. In the third Sadam returned the favor the Jay by dropping him with a great left hook. Rounds four thru seven were a clear display of Ali’s boxing skills and won every round although Krupp was right there and fought well. In the eighth and final round Ali secured the win by once again flooring Krupp. Ali improved to 17-0 and gave the home crowd an exciting fight to witness. Hat’s off to Jay Krupp who actually made me a fan with his heart and determination in this fight. The final fight of the evening had Emmanuel Gonzalez (12-0) taking on Noel Echevarria (11-0) where someone’s 0 had to go. Although the TV camera’s didn’t catch this bout, Gonzalez fighting with a heavy heart due to the loss of his grandfather last week, improved to 13-0 by totaling dominating Echevarria in four rounds. Team Gonzalez was in full effect and Manny looked exceptional to remain undefeated. Boxing at Barclays is truly where it’s at !!
